Crews Hold 'Shakedown'

On Tuesday evening, July 10th, our four Philmont bound crews came to the Family Life Center with their packs, loaded and ready for the adventure which begins on Friday. To prove that everyone had just the right gear, everything was removed from the packs and each item was checked against a list of required/recommended gear.  Only allowed items were placed back into the backpacks.  Everything else was taken home.  A few missing items were also found through this process and members have until Friday morning to obtain those things.

Once the packs were reviewed in this way, they were stored in the Troop Office, at the FLC, where they were ready for the Friday morning departure.

Press Release:

"Twenty Boy Scouts and thirteen Adult Leaders, from Troop 520, set out this morning on a high adventure expedition to Philmont Scout Ranch, in Cimmaron, New Mexico, where they will spend eleven days backpacking in the Sangre DeCristo mountains. Organized into four 'crews', two of the groups of Scouts will be hiking in the northern portion of Philmont's 215 square miles of mountain wilderness, while the other two crews will hike in the central and south portions of the ranch. All four groups are scheduled to hike more than 60 miles in eleven days on the trail. Along the way they will participate in activities such as rock climbing, horseback riding, gold panning, etc. Three of the crews will also climb one of Philmont's major peaks, Mount Waite Phillips or Baldy Mountain. One of the crews will also explore the Valle Vidal wilderness area, off the Philmont property. On the trail, every participant will carry his share of crew equipment (such as pots and tents), food and water, along with personal gear and clothing.

"Hiking in the North, as Crew #1 are Scouts Jeffrey MacHott, Chris Marshall, Jason Phillips, Alex Roeber and John Schleif. Bob Bereit, Mike King, Don Roeber and Rick Schleif are the Adult Advisors.

"Hiking in the South, as Crew #2 are Donovan Bacuyag, David Clark, Aaron Contreras, Jed Irwin and Jonathan McConduit. Kevin Bolton, Mike Irwin and Dennis McConduit are the Adult Advisors.

"Crew #3 will also be hiking in the South, with Bryan Prasifka (Crew Leader), Justin Reeves, Raymond Rodriquez, Chris Roeber and Aaron Rogers. Adult Advisors are Gary Hefler and Brian McGinley.
